Konnichiwa! My name is Sarah and I am a “Gastronome”. I’ve loved food my whole life, but not in the “I love you like a fat kid loves cake”, kind of way but more in a “Live to eat” fashion. I was raised in Tokyo, Japan, where my love for food flourished into a passion, thanks to the abundance of culinary delights available in the city. I always tell people that Japan has the best food in the world. If you’ve never been, I really recommend taking a visit out there to see for yourself!
After graduating from high school in Tokyo, I moved abroad to California to complete my undergraduate degree. During my four years in California, I longed for the food back home and would always look forward to my vacations back to Tokyo for Christmas, summer and spring break.
In 2010, I decided to follow my passion for food and applied to the Gastronomy Masters program at Boston University. During the program, I received my culinary certificate, where I had the pleasure of working with some amazing chefs such as Ming Tsai, Jamie Bissonnette and even the great chef himself, Jacques Pépin!
During my time at Boston University, I learned more about the restaurant and food industry by working as a hostess at the Island Creek Oyster Bar.
After receiving my Masters, I decided it was time for me to move back to the West Coast and am now currently residing in Redondo Beach. I live near my extended family, whom I am very close with. They are the inspiration behind my blog, katei-ryori. With my blog I hope to pay homage to my family who have supported me through all my endeavors and to also demonstrate the pride I have in my heritage.
Most of all, I hope that my passion for food and cooking ignites a similar passion within yourself that will invite you to indulge in life and all its pleasures.
To quote the great Julia Child:
“Find something you’re passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.”
